Rag rugs are an American tradition of repurposing and resourcefulness. If you have old linens or clothes that are on their last legs, you can use them to make a rug for the cost of a spool of thread. In this class I will show you how to make a rag rug from old clothes (or any fabric you want to use). Your rug can follow a classic circular or oval pattern, or you can veer from tradition and turn it into a whimsical piece of fabric art, such as the one I made depicting snake friends swimming under a pomegranate tree. If you don’t yet know how to operate a needle and thread, you can learn in this class. Children are welcome and if they are too young to use a needle, they can help by braiding fabric.
- Any kind of fabric, preferrably with a variety of colors and textures
- Fabric scissors or pinking shears
- A thimble
- A sturdy needle
