Description from the Artist:
This piece was inspired by a seeing photo of the Chumash crossing to the Channel Islands in the tomol in 1976. The trip was made possible by the confluence of ancient knowledge and modern inquiry to rebuild by hand one of the oldest ocean crossing vessels in North America. The voyage retraces the 21 mile ancient Chumash trading route which can take up to 13 hours to complete depending upon ocean conditions. I chose a limited palette with emphasis on the repetition of diagonal lines of the oars to celebrate this collaboration.
