Art Submission Requirements

Exhibition Requirements

General Requirements

  • All artwork must be ready to hang, signed, and original. Giclée, AI, and/or any reproduction will not be accepted.

    • Ready to hang: Whether your work is on canvas, cradled wood, or is framed, your work must be wired properly with appropriate hanging-grade metal wire. Please see our framing/wiring tutorial here. → (This link leads to the “HOW TO WIRE YOUR WORK” page) Sculptural artworks need not be wired, but must be securely freestanding.

      • Signed: Submitted artwork must be signed either on the front or back.

      • Original: By original, we mean that the artwork is created by you using your own ideas, style, and materials. We accept both physical and digital media. However, we will not accept art directly copying another artist’s work, nor will we accept giclées or works generated by AI.

  • All Carpinteria Arts Center exhibitions are Buy-It & Take-It. Therefore, all artwork must be available for purchase. Artists’ commission is 60% of all sales, while Carpinteria Arts Center will retain 40% of the sale.

  • Artwork may not exceed 48” inches on any side.

  • Artwork may not exceed 50 pounds.

  • Artwork displayed in the Charles Lo Bue Gallery within the last year will not be accepted.

  • Artwork mounted on cardboard, posterboard, or other material determined to be unsuitable for a gallery will not be accepted.

Specific Requirments by Medium

  • Canvas must be at least ¾” thick if not framed. If the canvas is less than ¾” thick, it must be framed.
    • Framed artwork or artwork on cradled wood do not have a minimum depth requirement.
  • Canvas edges must be covered with the artist’s chosen medium (paint, photography, etc.) on all sides.
  • Artwork on cradled wood is permitted with unfinished/unpainted edges.

  • Because of the nature of digital art, photography and printmaking, submitting a printed reproduction of your original artwork in these mediums is acceptable. While not required, we encourage you to edition work created with these mediums.
  • If your work is selected and sold during an exhibit, it is acceptable to bring a copy of the original selected artwork as a replacement piece. However, after the exhibit ends, we will not accept additional copies of the piece into future exhibits until a year has passed.
  • Sculpture and other three-dimensional artwork must be securely freestanding. Artists are required to provide hardware for any hanging or otherwise insecure artwork. If requested, please be available during the week of install to assist with any special considerations or hardware requirements.

Bringing in Replacement Artwork

  • Because of the dynamic nature of our Buy-It & Take-It model, artists will be notified when artwork is sold and asked to present an additional piece of artwork to replace the sold piece. Providing a replacement piece is not required, but is highly encouraged. We ask that replacement artwork be no larger than the piece that was sold, and that the replacement artwork matches the current theme of the exhibit.
  • Before dropping off replacement artwork, artists MUST email Christy@carpinteriaARTScenter.org with the following information before dropping off artwork:
    1. A quality photograph of the artwork.
    2. Title.
    3. Medium.
    4. Price.
    5. Dimensions.
    6. A brief description.
  • Please allow 30 days for the recording and processing of sold artwork to receive a check in the mail. For further questions about payment processing, you may email our Senior Accountant Elsa@carpinteriaARTScenter.org.

Bin Art Requirements

Carpinteria Arts Center invites all artists selected into the current exhibit to submit bin art. Bin art presents an economical option to gallery visitors by offering unframed, original, and non-juried artwork for view and purchase. Unlike juried exhibit artwork, bin art does not have to match the theme of the current exhibit.

Requirements & Expectations
  • Each artist exhibiting in the current show may bring up to 5 pieces of bin art.
  • Bin art must be clearly labeled on the back with the artist’s Name, Title, Medium, and Price.
  • Bin art must be completely plastic-wrapped on all sides. We suggest using clear, sealable cellophane bags.
  • Bin art must have a backing board unless the piece is on wood or canvas panel. Only flat work can be submitted to the bin. Canvas on stretcher frames will not be accepted.
  • Only original artwork by the submitting artist will be accepted. Reproductions will not be accepted unless the work uses the following mediums: digital art, photography, printmaking.
  • Bin art must not exceed 22 x 32 inches.
  • Bin art must be presentable (ie. wrapped neatly, free of blemishes, etc). If your work is determined to be unpresentable, Celeste will work with you to find a solution.
  • Matting bin artwork is recommended, but not required.
  • So that bin art does not create competition against the artwork that is exhibited on the wall, we recommend that bin art be priced NO HIGHER than $250.

You will be reminded via email to pick up unsold bin art (along with additional unsold artwork) one week from the last day of the exhibit.
