Beginning Watercolor - The Next Step Materials List
Instructor: Janey Cohen
Please plan ahead! You may need to order online, and it can take two weeks to get some things from Blick Art.
You will be provided with:
One round brush, size 8
A palette of Daniel Smith paints, 9 colors, from which you can mix just about any color you would want.
A cup for water
Several pieces of 9” x 12” 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper
One 4B drawing pencil with eraser
One board for taping your paper onto
Masking tape
Salt
Paper Towels
You should bring:
• Your own watercolor brushes in other sizes - I suggest a round brush size 12 or 14 and a small round brush. Robert Simmons is a good brand. OR you could go with the Blick brand. Other brands are fine, too. I suggest you purchase synthetic bristles.

• A second board for taping down paper. You can use gator board or hard board panels, or even foam core. Just be sure it is larger than your paper. This is something you will use all the time, so it is a good investment.

Optional:
Artist tape - this is better to use than masking tape, because there is less chance of your paper ripping when you remove it.

Masking fluid - you might want to try using this to block out areas that you wish to keep white. It is also fun to splatter it before and after you do a wash. Another good investment. https://www.dickblick.com/products/daniel-smith-masking-fluid/

Your own paints - you may decide that you would like your own, different colors or brand of watercolor paints. Feel free to bring any that you own or borrow from a friend. Now is a good time to experiment. There are MANY varieties of watercolor paints available. Don’t feel you need to use my palette or my brand.
Watercolor paper - You may prefer to use heavier watercolor paper than the 140 lb. I will provide. You can purchase a full sheet of watercolor paper at Art Essentials (and maybe at Michaels) or you can order it from dickblick.com. I can show you in class how to cut it into the correct size pieces. (You don’t actually CUT watercolor paper - you tear it.) My favorite paper is Arches 300 lb. cold press in natural white.
