Description from the Artist: Rising from the Mud is a polymer photographic etching created from an image I made of the Carpinteria Women's March in the winter of 2018.  The January flash flood and subsequent devastating debris flows in Montecito and Carpinteria that resulted from the earlier Thomas fire cut the communities of Carpinteria and Summerland off from Santa Barbara and other towns to the west and north for several weeks.  As a result, on the day of the large Women's March slated for Santa Barbara in conjunction with the national Women's March, local activists organized a smaller, separate Women's March for people here in Carpinteria.   When the several hundred marchers reached the beach from Linden Ave, I managed to capture their profile with my camera as they walked in a long line on the crest of the beach, just beyond and, seemingly, above the muddy flood debris that dump trucks had hauled in and dumped in the parking lot at the State Beach.
