Description: Inspiration struck me at a stoplight as I watched a bent-over woman with worn-out tennis shoes cross the street - I thought, with a play on words, she appears to be a “lost soul”. From that moment, I knew I had to create with the soles of old shoes.
While searching for an image, I found a photograph of a homeless man named Dale, photographed by Pedro Oliveira. His eyes told a story Pedro captured beautifully, and I’m grateful for his permission to use it. I posterized the photo, cut shoe soles to match each shape, nailed them to plywood, and painted them. I left the eyes in shades of grey, as they are the true window to the soul.
